Paracas tours: the Ballestas Islands and the National Reserve

Paracas is one of the most striking destinations on Peru’s southern coast. It stands out for its National Reserve, the Ballestas Islands and its sea and desert landscapes: beaches, cliffs and wildlife by the ocean.

What is there to do in Paracas?

First up are the Ballestas Islands: you visit them by speedboat from the Paracas pier, passing the Candelabra, and on the islands you see sea lions, Humboldt penguins and thousands of guano birds. The Ballestas Islands tour leaves every half hour in the morning.

On land is the Paracas National Reserve, with desert, cliffs and beaches such as Yumaque and Playa Roja. You can explore it on the Paracas tour, which combines the islands and the reserve in one day, or on the Paracas National Reserve buggy tour, with the Mirador del Istmo.

How do you get to Paracas?

Paracas is about 250 km south of Lima on the Pan-American Highway South. If you’re leaving from Lima and only have one day, the Paracas and Ica day trip from Lima takes you there and back. The other options are in the guide How to get to Paracas from Lima.
